I don't think one is "stronger" than the other. The nice thing about manuals, other than having to get out to engage them, is that when you put them in, they're in, when you take them out, they're out. Autos you have to back up to release them. I guess, being kind of old school I prefer manual. You know what you're dealing with, you do it, it's done.
